Joseph R. Scogna Jr. presenting SAF research, 1980s
The Researcher
The SAF method was developed by Joseph R. Scogna Jr. through fourteen years of intensive inquiry into a single question: where exactly does a pattern begin, and how can it be precisely located in the body?
His answer — documented in more than 100 published manuscripts and texts — became the Self Awareness Formulas chain sequence method. It is not a borrowed framework or a reinterpretation of existing modalities. It is original research, rigorously developed from 1975 to 1989.
Scogna studied university physics and chemistry. He approached the body as an electrical system — not metaphorically, but literally. Voltage, current, resistance, black body radiation. He believed that what conventional medicine catalogued as disease entities were, at a deeper level, reflections of voltage changes and electron transfer patterns that could be measured, mapped, and addressed.
Working in the long wavelength band of infrared thermal emissions, Scogna found that pressure and heat were stratified pockets of energy condensed to such a degree that they formed what is called in physics, Black Body Mass. These masses could be traced to specific organ and gland systems and correlated to specific emotional states.
Over fourteen years Scogna developed a complete system. A numbering matrix for 24 organ and gland systems. Emotional correlations for each. Questionnaires that could generate a chain sequence from a person's responses. An infrared sensitizer that could scan the body's energetic field and produce the same sequence from heat readings. And a computing system — one of the first of its kind — that could interpret those sequences and produce specific remedy and modality recommendations.
He authored more than 200 texts, papers, pamphlets and books, created 300 computer programs and 50 separate main databases. All of it in service of the same core insight: that the body communicates in patterns, those patterns have specific origins, and those origins can be found.
"SAF is not medical diagnosis. All physical diseases have underlying emotional causes — some may be very deep indeed — so it is this aspect of the human being that we address in the science of SAF."
— Joseph R. Scogna Jr.
The Research Timeline
Research begins
Joseph Scogna begins systematic inquiry into the relationship between bioelectrical patterns in the body and emotional and physical states. Studies in radiation and electromagnetic principles inform the early framework.
Life Energy Research Foundation established
Scogna founds the Life Energy Research Foundation in Mount Penn, Pennsylvania, establishing a base for ongoing research, practitioner training, and publication.
The Promethion published
Publication of The Promethion: A Comprehensive Study of the Principles of Life Energy, cataloguing environmental chemicals, their effects, and their antidotes. A foundational text for the SAF system.
Infrared integration and computerization
The Life Energy Computer System is developed — one of the earliest clinical computing systems of its kind — integrating infrared scanning with the SAF numerical matrix. The system runs on an Apple IIe with custom programs and databases.
Practitioner network expands
SAF is being used by practitioners across the United States and internationally. The system is adopted alongside conventional medical practice by physicians, naturopaths, nutritionists, and other health professionals.
Research period concludes
Joseph R. Scogna Jr. passes away. At the time of his death he had authored more than 200 texts and papers, developed 300 computer programs, and created a complete system for identifying and addressing the energetic origins of physical and emotional patterns.
SAF Online launched
Kathy M. Scogna launches SAF Online at LifeEnergyResearch.com, making the SAF computing system accessible worldwide via browser subscription, with the ExTech IR200 as the recommended infrared device.
The work continues
Life Energy Publications LLC, led by Nic Scogna, continues to advance and preserve the SAF methodology through practitioner training, one-on-one sessions, publishing, and the Institute for Modern Holistic Alchemy.
Key Works
1980
A Comprehensive Study of the Principles of Life Energy. Scogna reunites spiritual alchemy with physical chemistry, tracing the history and personality of the elements combined with a catalog of environmental chemicals, their effects, and their antidotes.
1985
A Treatise on Electromagnetic Pollution. Radiation and radiant energies, what they are and what can be done. As a result of his radiation studies, Scogna developed the SAF numbering system. This book started it all.
Core Text
Self Awareness Formulas: Organs, Glands and Dragons — simplified. The definitive introduction to the theory, numbers, and emotions of SAF. Written for practitioners, patients and participants. If you could only have one book, this is it.
Reference
The Fundamentals of Human Electricity. How we create power and energy, how mental images are formed and stored, and the effects of mass-energy imbalance. Describes the body's electrical nature in voltage, current, and amplitude terms.
Advanced
Unlocking the Hidden Secrets of Your DNA. Five senses? How about 128 sensory channels. Paradigm-shifting for self awareness and energetic work. Includes DNA inscriptions and the 16 steps of the Z Process.
2014
For use with the ExTech IR200. Compiled by Kathy M. Scogna from articles written 1980–2014. The complete guide to infrared scanning with SAF, including the Gravinometric Face Points and the Guide to SAF Online.

Continuing the Legacy
As the son of Joseph R. Scogna Jr., Nic carries forward the SAF methodology through the Institute for Modern Holistic Alchemy (IMHA), practitioner training, one-on-one sessions, and The Holistic Monitor podcast.
SAF chain interpretation sessions are currently conducted directly by Nic. You're working with someone who has lived with this methodology their entire life — not a junior practitioner, but the person responsible for stewarding and advancing the work his father built.
Based in Lexington, KY, Nic's mission is simple: make SAF accessible to anyone ready for a deeper understanding of themselves.
He is a Licensed Massage Therapist and longstanding SAF practitioner, having integrated SAF and infrared evaluation into client work for more than a decade. He leads practitioner training, SAF Aware development, and the ongoing modernization of the SAF system.
